“Where did you get that headboard?!” That’s the question of the hour anytime someone walks into our bedroom. Well fun fact: we made them… Ok, maybe that’s not the whole truth. Our wonderful dad made them, but we helped! These headboards truly bring an authentic look to any bedroom and the best part is that they are easy to make & extremely affordable.
– 10 wood planks (you will only use 7/8, but get extra just in case
– long screws or nails
– belt sander
– chalk
– acrylic paint
– string lights
Head on over to your nearest antique store to find any planks of wood you can. The color doesn’t necessary matter because there is the option to stain the wood dark brown at a later time. If you have absolutely no idea where your nearest antique store is located, do not fear. Call a local landscaping company and ask if they have any leftover wooden pallets. Most are more than willing to help you out. Another idea is driving behind local large stores (Target, CVS, Best Buy) and checking to see if there are any pallets laying in the back.
Place all the separate planks of wood into piles. Once the piles are ready to be finalized, lay 2 pieces of wood vertically on the back to fasten the headboard. If the 2 vertical pieces are too long, you can use a saw to make it even (this is where your dad comes into play). Use long screws to screw in each plank and make sure they are extra secure. Nobody needs a broken head in the middle of the night The last step of assembling is to sand down all of the wood. If you want to save yourself a bit of time, you can purchase a Skil Belt Sander for $50 off of Amazon Prime.
Now that the assembly is complete, its time to choose your favorite quote! Make sure it’s one you won’t get sick of because you have to see it everyday when you get up & go to bed. Now heres the key tip: stencil the quote using chalk. This way you don’t have to stress about painting it perfectly the first time. For the final touch, use Americana acylic paint from your nearest Jo-Ann’s Fabric and Craft store. Find someone with great handwriting and you’re set!
Pick up some colorful string lights from Cost Plus World Market and drape them around the outside border of the headboard. Finally, buy adorable matching pillows from TJ Max HomeGoods for some extra detail. THERE YOU HAVE IT! Your own DIY headboard for all your jealous friends to drool over and it didn’t break your bank account.
